Africa imports close to nine million metric tonnes of rice each year - a significant portion of its annual consumption. Given its population growth, urbanisation and improving standard of living, rice consumption will continue to increase. While the country has abundant arable land and water resources, it has not been able to significantly increase its cultivation of rice due to fragmentation and subsistence-based farming in Africa. Olam has the ability to produce two crops each year in our large scale farms. Over the next few years, we plan to scale up our farming activities further across more African geographies. Olam has relationships with the right partners to source optimal seeds and planting and irrigation programmes.
Olam’s experience and capabilities in Africa have helped create good value for our stakeholders, through R&D we have developed a competitive edge, especially in introducing advanced agronomic practices and increasing overall yields. Not only have we generated a more secure supply of rice for our distribution channels, but we have also provided farmers with greater access to advanced farming techniques, thereby enhancing their farm incomes and productivity.
Our team has a combined experience of more that 75 years and work tirelessly to improve yield and the livelihoods of farmers and their communities.
