Olam’s foray into Central Africa began with the setting up of Olam Cameroon in 1994, to manage the origination, processing and export of cocoa and coffee beans to Europe and the USA. With our Cameroon operations expanding its portfolio to include the import and distribution of rice, we concurrently set up operations in the Republic of Gabon for wood products and rice. In 2010, we expanded our scope further to include the Republic of Congo, where we acquired a wood products business.
Olam started in West Africa in Nigeria with the export of raw cashew nuts to India in 1989. It then expanded into The Republic of Benin in 1993, Ghana and Cóte d’Ivoire in 1994 and subsequently to Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Senegal. Olam is today in 15 countries in West Africa with sourcing, processing and marketing operations covering a wide range of products.
