Olam’s first dealings with China were in 2003 when we conducted business through local representative offices. Since then, we have established a strong presence in China, setting up Olam in Shanghai in 2005 as our head office, and incorporating regional branch offices in Beijing, Tianjin, Dalian, Qingdao, Guangzhou and Urumqi. This has enabled us to be in closer proximity to our local customers and therefore, more reactive to their needs.
Today, we employ nearly 600 people across 11 locations and service more than 550 customers within China and in 40 countries worldwide. We are significant suppliers of all cotton growths, logs and lumber from our various concessions and saw mills in Africa, sesame from various African locations where Olam is based, peanuts & peanut oil from various Olam origins into China, besides export of chinese peanuts, imported sugar and dairy products into China. We are also Forest Stewardship Council (FSC©) Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certified for handling the distribution of FSC© certified logs in China.
In 2007, Olam acquired Qingdao Key Foods Limited in the Shandong Province, a dehydrated garlic manufacturing facility with fully-integrated manufacturing operations and a robust traceability programme. Our use of superior cleaning and dehydration technologies has enabled us to offer a high level of product consistency. This has helped us generate a strong customer franchise for our products worldwide.
Our facility has also been certified with various quality and safety certifications including AIB, BRC, IFS, HACCP, ISO 9001, Kosher, Halal, QS, & RQA. Seen as a model factory by the Chinese Inspection and Quarantine (CIQ) authorities especially among hundreds of competing businesses, we have also been Food and Drug Administration (FDA) audited in accordance with all food safety requirements of the USA.
